Character name: Knuckles the Echidna
Fandom: Sonic the Hedgehog (SEGA)
Timeline: Mid Sonic Adventure 2, right after he leaves Aquatic Mine

~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: oh boy
Okay first off, he has ~super strength~. One of the strongest Sonic characters, he’s able to smash through boulders with his
Although not as fast as Sonic, he is extremely fast characters and is able to run like a thing that runs fast.
He's able to control the Master Emerald and utilize it - as well as sense shards, as well as Chaos Emeralds (to a lesser extent). He sensed when Sonic was able to use Chaos Control, so he's shown to be somewhat sensitive to Chaos Energy in general.
He can climb walls with the spikes of his fists, and also dig with the same (although he uses shovel claws in SA1-SA2). He is also able to glide using his

Maximum Heat – He’s surrounded by some sort of red energy, and delivers powerful punches at very high speed. The momentum also lets him leap about a foot in the air when he’s doing an uppercut.
He's able to punch to the ground and stun an opponent - unnamed attack. There's a stronger version of this where he can cause a tremor in the ground that damages his opponent.
"Thunder Arrow" - a move that shocks his opponent and makes them dizzy.
"Power Flash" - a stronger move that renders the other opponent immobile for 10-20 seconds
How would they use their abilities?: Since there is no ME, he’d use them whenever he felt is necessary (or if someone pisses him off, baby has a bad temper). Probably helping people at some point, since he is a Jerk with a Heart of Gold ™
Appearance: Standing at 3’7”, Knuckles is a bright red echidna. He’s taller and more muscular (well, as much as three foot echidna can be) than most of the Sonic cast He’s covered in fur so he apparently feels no need to wear clothes (except for his tacky green and yellow lego-ish shoes, and his gloves)
He also possesses long “dreadlock” spines that resemble hair, and he has an up-turned white crescent on his chest (assumed birthmark). Also, he has GIANT HANDS, both with two protruding ‘knuckle-claws’. They’re under his thick white boxing gloves so it’s unknown what his hands actually look like, but he does use the barbs to climb, so it’s likely bone.
Oh, and the purple eyes. Can’t forget those ~manly amethyst~ eyes.

Background/Personality:
” As far back as I can remember, I've been living here on this dark island... Always guarding the Master Emerald from anything that could harm it. I don't know why I was given this job... Why it was my fate... Destined to be here... forever!”
That’s pretty much how it is. Knuckles the Echidna, the last of his line, the Guardian of Angel Island and the Master Emerald – an all powerful gem that keeps the island floating high in the air – among other things. If he remembers his parents, he gave no indication of it ever. For as long as he could remember, he’s been on the island – guarding the Emerald and the Island and doing little else.
Aside from that, his history isn’t exactly an enigma, but it isn’t outright stated. Up until Sonic came into his life – he was Guardian of the Master Emerald (And the Chaos Emeralds, to an extent) as well as the island. It can be assumed he learned the entire island like the back of his hand, kept it running, and took care of all the wildlife and probably some of the creatures as well.
Now, when Sonic came into his life, that was a turning point. He didn’t meet Sonic first. No, he met Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik – who crash landed his Death Egg after Sonic defeated it. Knuckles encountered the downed Dr. Eggman – never having met or heard of the man before. Eggman used this to his advantage, tricking Knuckles into believing Sonic was a dangerous hedgehog hell-bent on stealing the emeralds.
Aaaand the echidna fell for it, hook line and sinker. He helped Robotnik recover (and even allowed him a base of sorts to build robots, although it’s not clear how aware he was of what Robotnik was really doing) – and encountered Sonic as he came on the island for innocent purposes.
Of course, having been tricked – Knuckles used his abilities and vast knowledge of the island to dump the hedgehog into nasty situation after another (always with levers!). As Sonic came closer to the emeralds (trying to keep them for Robotnik) and Robotnik came closer to rebuilding the Death Egg, things got more and more intense. It eventually lead to one on one fight in Hidden Palace. Which was cut short as Knuckles saw Robotnik making off with the Master Emerald. Finally realizing he’d been tricked, he tried to get the Emerald free – but only got electrocution. Robotnik escaped with the Emerald, and Knuckles reluctantly helped Sonic. (Note: In the Knuckles storyline, Knuckles fights Mecha Sonic for the Master Emerald in Sky Sanctuary, but in the Sonic storyline it’s Sonic who fights him on the Death Egg)
In the end, the Master Emerald was restored to its rightful place – and since then Knuckles has become a rival for Sonic. Knuckles still didn’t fully trust him and the two of them had several more encounters, usually involving Knuckles getting tricked into fighting him – or the two of them working together.
The next big event was… well, the events of Sonic Adventure 1. The poor echidna’s nap was suddenly interrupted by something smashing. Turns out, it was his beloved Master Emerald – and the culprit appeared to a be a creature made of water. With no Emerald, Angel Island crashed into the water, and of course Knuckles went to collect all the pieces to restore it as fast as he could. As he did, he became embroiled in a plot by Dr. Eggman involving the water creature – Chaos – incidentally, to collect the seven Chaos Emeralds to turn it into Perfect Chaos – a creature of total destruction.
He was tricked – again – by Eggman into believing Sonic was after the Master Emerald shard – and attacked as soon as he saw the hedgehog with a shiny green object (which happened to not be the Emerald at all). But after realizing his mistake, he (somewhat reluctantly) worked with Sonic again to stop Eggman – all the while experiencing strange flashbacks to ancient echidnas. It was as if he was there with them – and he saw bits and pieces of their history. Chaos, tiny docile creatures – Tikal – a gentle echidna who took care of them – and her father, Pachacamac – who would do anything for the Chaos Emeralds.
After the Master Emerald is completed, Knuckles believes his job is finishes – and goes back to the Island, with a sense of peace, despite everything. However, this is quickly shattered as everything comes together. Chaos – was a creature from the time of the echidnas. Pachacamac, despite his daughter’s protests – was willing to kill innocent chao to get to the Emeralds. Chaos – who was the guardian of those chao – saw the clan trampling its wards (and Tikal, who tried to stop them) – and lost itself to rage. Using the powers of the Chaos Emeralds, it became Perfect Chaos, and wiped out the echidnas. Tikal sealed herself into the Master with him – and the few remaining echidnas made it their duty to protect the Emerald and insure that Chaos was never released. That knowledge had been lost when Knuckles came to inherit his duties.
In any case, Chaos had absorbed the (negative_ power from all of the Chaos Emeralds – and transformed into Perfect Chaos – a beast that ravaged Station Square. Knuckles again worked with Sonic and others (Tails, Amy, etc) to find the dead Emeralds. Sonic and friends were able to restore the Emeralds by thinking of the positive and generally using the ~power of friendship~. Aaaanyywaaay, Sonic became Super Sonic – defeated Perfect Chaos – and restored it to its regular state. Chaos has a happy reunion with Tikal and the chao and they go back to their time ~together~, happy ending etc.
Knuckles’s life returned to normal. For a tiiiiime. Of course, things can never stay quiet, so it wasn’t long after that the Master Emerald was put in danger again. This time by a GUN agent, the flirty, curvy, triple-crossing gem-obsessed Rouge the Bat. Rouge made a proclamation – all the world’s gems would belong to her, especially the Master Emerald. Knuckles felt differently. As they were arguing and fighting, Dr. Eggman passed by and nabbed it. With no other way to keep it out of his hands, Knuckles was forced to smash the poor Emerald once again. The shards went flying everywhere – and both Knuckles and Rouge began their hunt.
Many other events were afoot – the Project Shadow, created by Gerald Robotnik – now used by Eggman – Sonic being framed for his crimes. Ultimately, it was all part of a plan to destroy the world. As far as Knuckles knew – he was just trying to beat Rouge to the shards. It was a while before he encountered Sonic and friends again. Just as he was about to – was when he was taken on board the SS. Thor.
In terms of personality, well.
You could say. “If Sonic exemplifies the wild, then Knuckles is the mountain: Stern and unmovable”
Knuckles is, well. His first priority is the Emerald/Island and he’s dedicated to his duty to the max. Stubborn, anti-social, quick-tempered, gullible, loner, all of these apply.
He comes off as angry and standoffish at first glance. That’s usually how he acts. He’s very stubborn and straight-up bull-headed (to the max) at times, especially when it comes to his duties. His duties are his raison d’être, and he takes them so seriously it’s probably not healthy. His short temper is even shorter where they’re concerned. His methods of dealing with things usually are “punch first, ask questions later”, especially around those two subjects, oh boy.
Part of his rivalry with Sonic is that he envies Sonic’s careless lifestyle, although Sonic also seems to enjoy pushing Knuckles’s buttons and riling him up.
Having grown up ALL BY HIIIIIIMSELF, Knuckles has little to no social skills. Really. He’s very grumpy, quick to anger, blunt and straight-forward and is just, well a jerk. A jerk with a heart of gold, but a jerk none-the-less. He doesn’t like to have to rely on others for anything, and can get very very stubborn about accepting help from other people (I wouldn’t go as far to say as he’s arrogant, but he’s definitely got a lot of pride in himself and his abilities.)
Alright, about that heart of gold. He’s very honest and straightforward, and in a way – he expects the rest of the world to be as well. Although his gullibility is more due to how short-sighted he can when it comes to the Master Emerald – he does have a kind of (weirdly enough) trusting nature, and wants to believe there’s good in everyone. And though he’ll claim otherwise – he will help others. (In SA2, despite Rouge trying to steal the Emerald and them fighting the entire game, he saves her from dying and even apologizes for hurting her. In Sonic Adventure 2, Amy’s left behind by Sonic and Tails. Knuckles encounters her, and the next scene they appear in they’re together in a completely different location.
In Sonic X, which is an adapt of the games but stays close-ish to the established personalities, he acts as if Amy is a bother he’d be glad to leave behind, but the very second she’s in danger he rushes to her defence.)
Even with Sonic – Knuckles won’t call him a friend – but they’re often working together and Knuckles will stop to help him, as much as he claims otherwise.
Sooo he’s not all jerk, really. Another quirk about his personality is that he is actually awkward with women and girl-shy. Despite his quick temper and his bad habit of solving things with his fists, he has never hit a girl in canon (aside from Rouge, who was a direct threat to the Emerald and he apologized after anyway) More than that, Knuckles has a pretty strong honour code.
Although he will never admit it to anyone, he is actually lonely, underneath it all. He has difficulty admitting it to himself. He’s known to talk to himself as well,though it’s more like him thinking out loud (and fictional characters talk to themselves a LOT…especially Japanese ones, I don’t get it)
He also hates strong lights, and loves fruit. He seems to enjoy treasure-hunting as well.
Additionally, he’s pretty bad with technology (although he seemed perfectly fine with operating the technology on the Island, but I guess it’s older or something), and still not used to big cities.

1st person sample:
[The feed begins at the Arrivals area, as it so often does. Except well, it seems there’s been some property damage. One of the desks has been snapped completely in half, and among the wreckage is an angry echidna, fists clenched, shooting a death glare at the alien clerk. The alien clerk, of course, is unmoved]
How about I shove this paper down your throat, and then we’ll see how golden rod it is!
[No response from the alien, just a bored look. This doesn’t help matters]
Give me my answers or I’ll beat them out of you!! I want to know what happened to my--
[The alien responds at last, with a rather snooty tone. “If you read the first page of form 31A for refuges, you’d know that--”]
[The alien is promptly cut off, by said echidna – now furious – lunging for its head. He’s grabbed from behind by a group of security guards – blocking the view of the camera. There’s legs and other appendages everywhere – and suddenly everything blurs as if the Guide’s moving. Then a crack, and the screen goes black]
3rd person sample: “This is another one of Eggman’s tricks, isn’t it?!” He’d growled, at first, stomping past the line-up and right up to the aliens.
World destroyed? As if it could be! Not for the lack of Eggman (and Chaos) for that matter, trying – but they’d always been stopped. …By Sonic.
And now Knuckles was supposed to believe that everyone and everything was gone, just like that?
Not that he really cared. Nope, not at all. Only the Emerald and the Island mattered (but if the world was destroyed, wouldn’t they be too?)
A few of the aliens gave him scandalized looks as he stomped by them, but he just glared back. None of them actually made a move to attack him. Good – he was not in the mood for any of this and was quite willing to respond to violence with violence. As it stood, he wanted to punch something particularly badly right now. As well as get an explanation. Preferably some sort of mixture of the two.
He tried to focus on that thought, rather than everything being destroyed. Even the possibility that the two things his life revolved around were gone was something he wasn’t sure he could ever get used to.
If it was a trick though, who would go to all this effort? And why?
Letting out a little growl, he shoved his way up to alien that looked the most authoritative. No. Getting explanations now, thinking about the details later.
”Hey, you.” The alien was so much bigger than he was, but that didn’t deter him in the slightest. He turned his glower up at the alien. “Time for some answers. Now.”
